Standing for Justice, Even in Difficult Losses

This week, we stood in court against the federal government defending a Colombian man accused of international drug trafficking alleged to have impacted the United States. The case involved the U.S. government asserting extraterritorial jurisdiction over a defendant who lived in Colombia for the entire period at issue. The Colombian National Police, along with the DEA, FBI, and U.S. Coast Guard, all played roles in the prosecution.

We lost the trial. Sentencing is scheduled for April, and mandatory minimums will make that phase especially challenging. Still, we will continue to represent our client with determination and care, working to achieve the most reasonable outcome possible under difficult circumstances.

This loss weighs heavily, not just legally, but personally. The pain experienced by our client and his family is real, and it is impossible to ignore. While we respect the rule of law, we continue to question the reach of jurisdiction asserted in this case and believe those questions deserve serious consideration.

We are grateful that our client was afforded the right to challenge his conviction through a trial and that the Constitution extends meaningful protections even to foreign citizens. At Maddux Attorneys, our mission is to pursue fairness and justice for all people. We believe the true measure of advocacy is not only found in wins, but in the willingness to stand up, fight, and be difference makers even when the outcome is not what we hoped for.
