Since 1989, the City of Tampa has enforced an ordinance that protects all birds, both domestic and wild, from being hunted, harmed, or harassed. This unique law includes the free-roaming chickens of Ybor City, which wander the neighborhood as living symbols of the area’s rich cultural history.

Because of their historic and cultural significance, Ybor’s chickens are protected under city law. Their care and preservation are further supported by the Ybor Chicken Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the chickens’ welfare through education, community outreach, and hands-on care.
